Organic Search Engine Optimization or SEO is very likely the most important things you can do to improve the success of your online business. Traffic is the lifeblood of every online business. There are two types of traffic; targeted and untargeted.
Untargeted traffic can come from anywhere, social websites such as Twitter, Facebook or Digg can provide a lot of untargeted traffic. This traffic is not bad, but generally does not create a lot of customers or revenue. It’s nice to have, but that’s about it.
Targeted traffic on the other hand comes primarily from search engines. A web surfer is looking for something specific, he types that into a search engine like Google or Yahoo!, and they get a listing of what that particular search engine thinks is the best match for their search term. If they are like most of us, they will click on one of the first three listings.
If you were lucky enough to be one of those first three listings, you just got a visitor that is interested in what your site has to offer. This is targeted traffic, this type of traffic from which the bulk of your sales will come.
Of course the trick in getting lots of targeted traffic is getting to the top of the search engine rankings. Depending on how competitive your keyword is will determine how difficult that will become. The main factors you will need to consider are
- Is the keyword in your domain name. If it is, that is a big plus. If you have an established online business, you don’t need to change it now, but if you have not decided on a domain name, try to pick one with your keyword in the title
- Make sure that the keyword is in your site title
- Make sure the keyword is in your content, especially the H1 and H2 tags
- Begin getting as many anchored backlinks as possible
Of the four listed above, the last one is the most important, and it also takes the most work. Depending on the competition, you may need thousands of backlinks to rank at the top of the search engine listings. Other , not so competitive sites may only require 10-20 backlinks.
I am using this exact method to rank for Atlanta Web Design, which is a relatively competitive term, with enough work I will make it to the first page of Google, and then hopefully the number one spot. This will generate a good amount of targeted traffic.
