Wedding Day Disaster Stories

We all want our wedding day to be perfect, but sometimes things happen which are out of our control and have the potential to ruin your day. Here are some stories about three couples who were faced with disaster!

Groom feeling grim

The groom collapsed and was rushed to the Waiheke Island medical centre on the eve of the wedding wit a mystery illness. Would he make it to the wedding? As her fiancé lay in bed, heavily medicated, and her family enjoyed the pre-wedding party, Susan vowed she would be getting married the following day – even if Andrew had to be wheeled in!

Thankfully, the day dawned with a beautiful blue sky, the groom had recovered, and the couple were able to go ahead with their celebrations.

Gown cover-up

Rachel went to great lengths to hide her gown from her fiancé Paul as they travelled from London, through America for 10 days on their way home to New Zealand.

But an overzealous customs official nearly ruined the surprise as he opened the bag to search for concealed contraband!

Luckily, Rachel was only carrying a weapon of mass distraction in the form of her gorgeous wedding gown, which remained hidden from Paul as he was quickly processed and ushered out of the room.

Dancing in the rain

Tanja and Jarrod awoke to a drizzly December day but remained hopeful that the sun would break through the clouds and shine for their planned beach wedding on Rabbit Island. Just as Tanja’s mascara was being applied, the dreaded phone call came from Jarrod – the ocean was rough, the beach was cold and windy, and it was raining non-stop.

Moving the ceremony inside to their nearby reception venue was out of the question as it didn’t open for another two hours – so Jarrod was sent scrambling for a new location.

A short time later Tanja and her entourage pulled up in the rain at the entrance to Rabbit Island, not knowing exactly where the wedding was now to take place. Then Tanja spotted Dutch and New Zealand flags marking a grassy path and followed it to find Jarrod surrounded by friends and family in a beautiful clearing sheltered by towering pine trees.

Thankfully, the rain stayed at bay during the short ceremony, reappearing just in time for champagne and photos! Although the wild weather added some extra stress, it also added a special dimension to their wedding, from unique photo opportunities to some very lasting memories.

How will you deal with unexpected problems? You can make the most of it like these couples or let it ruin your day – I know what I would rather do!
