Want to have a basketball goal at home, but think you can’t? There are so many options available for home basketball systems, one should certainly fit your situation and budget.
In-ground Basketball Systems
If you have a level driveway and plenty of space, the best option is an in-ground goal. It provides the most stability because the backboard is attached to a pole that is set into the ground with a cement footing.
Portable Basketball Systems
If you don’t have the right spot for an in-ground installation, or you just don’t want to commit to one permanent location, consider a portable basketball system. This model has the backboard mounted to a pole with a large base that is filled with sand or water for stability. The base has two wheels so that you can move the goal easily, for example to store it in the winter. This model is less stable than an in-ground goal, but if you keep the base properly filled and place it on a level spot, it shouldn’t be a problem.
Roof-Mounted Goals
The most economical way to install an outdoor goal is to mount a bracket on the roof of your garage or home. It is very sturdy and can easily be removed if necessary. This arrangement works well for small driveways and alleys. Many times an old, existing roof-mounted goal can be fixed up by simply buying a basketball backboard replacement or a new rim.
Indoor Options
If you don’t have an outdoor location for a goal, or you want to bring the basketball fun inside, there are many options as well. If you have a large recreation room, barn or church gym, you can install a regulation size backboard to a wall or post using a mounting bracket. A portable indoor goal with ballast weights is another option. These can be adjusted as low as 8 feet for low clearance ceilings. For smaller indoor spaces, over-the-door basketball goals can fill the need. These are mini hoops with an 8 to 9-inch rim that hook over an interior door. Finally, another way to enjoy shooting some hoops indoors is to purchase an arcade-style game. These are very popular for media and game rooms. The mesh and steel frame cages may have one or two baskets on the backboard, a return ramp, electrical score keeping and sound effects.
Look for these products at major sporting goods stores and online. Adding one to your home can create a great spot for family fun, exercise and stress relief.
