The new shaggy rugs, currently in vogue, are nothing like the rugs which were so much in fashion in the seventies. Although it’s true that you will still find purple, hot pink or orange faux fur rugs for sale, these are very much for those looking to create a retro look. The latest shaggy rugs are made from completely different materials and you are likely to find them in subdued colors and even pastel shades as well as bright ones.
One type of shaggy rug that is very much up to date is the leather rug. They are composed entirely of strips of leather knotted onto a canvas backing. It looks like a wool rug from a distance but it is very different up close where you appreciate the subtle colors of the hide, the luxury of the materials and the texture of the multitude of strips. Although leather is not normally a particularly soft material, rugs made in this way are surprisingly soft and springy underfoot and they are great to sit on or walk on barefoot. If you prefer even more texture, you can get similar area rugs made of suede strips. These rugs look wonderfully sophisticated in a contemporary living room or hall.
Another type of shag rug which is popular these days, and was not found in the seventies, is a rug made of strips of cotton t-shirt material. This fabric takes dye very well and therefore these rugs are made in all sorts of colors to suit every decorating scheme. As the floor rugs are composed of cotton, many of them are machine washable too, so they make great kids rugs. They work well in the bathroom too as they absorb a lot of water and are not easily affected by damp atmospheres. If you are looking for a washable rug for your kitchen, you should note that they are useful for the dining area of a kitchen but, because of the long pile potentially catching heels, they should not be used near food preparation areas where you might be moving around with hot pans or sharp knives.
