Video games and personal fitness have traditionally never been terms that one would associate together. After all, the stereotypical image of an avid gamer is someone who is out of shape and who does not have their priorities in order. However, video games are evolving at such a rate that fitness and gaming can truly be combined. The Nintendo Wii was the first to tackle this, and their premier game was even something called Wii Sports. Because you are basically required to stand up and move around while playing, you get to combine exercise with fun.

There is only so far that kind of technology can go, as a controller was still used. A new type of video game system, one that is meant to be used as an add on to the Xbox 360, is the Microsoft Kinect. The Kinect has been in development for quite some time, and for awhile was known as Project Natal. After years of arduous labor, the project was announced under the name Kinect, and it will become available later this year. The best thing about the Kinect is how you do not need to use a controller at all, and can control the Kinect games completely with your body.

You can see how this would be perfect for fitness. You are not limited by any kind of external hardware, and sophisticated imaging technology translates your movements into commands in games. Attempts at this kind of thing have been tried before, but our capabilities have expanded greatly since then. What we have seen of the Kinect fitness games is pretty great, and include titles like The Biggest Loser: Ultimate Workout. Over time, many new games will be released, including more fitness titles. This will give people an ideal avenue to exercise in their home, as people do not put off things that they find entertaining.
