If you want to get the best rice cooker for your own needs then there are a few different questions that you will have to ask yourself. There are many things to consider like, cost; size; brand; quality of rice; functions and options that you desire. Once you can state your preference to these issues then it becomes much easier to find a rice cooker that is right for you.
Rice cooking appliances vary considerably in price. You can find them from under $20 and they go all the way up to around $400. This is just the models available in North America. If you lived in Japan you would see that they have some machines that go up to about $1,000. This seems like a crazy price to pay for a kitchen appliance but obviously some people feel it is worth it. So before you start looking at rice cookers, you may want to first of all think about how much you can realistically afford. This helps to narrow the options down a bit.
The next thing you have to think about is which size range you should be considering. There are three sizes, small, medium and large. Cookers in these classes can feed up to five, ten and eighteen people respectively. So if you live alone you would have to have a good reason to get one of the largest machines. Conversely, buying a small rice cooker when you want to cook for a large family would be ill advised.
What brand to buy may or may not bother you. For me, I actively look to get Zojirushi rice cookers. On one hand this could be brand blindness to other good quality machines. But it does keep my focus narrow so I am able to research the various models in their range thoroughly. Zojirushi are the only brand of rice cooker I have ever owned. I am now on to my third machine. As far as I am concerned the rice they make is amazing so I have no real desire to try out any other make. One thing I have learned though is that if you live alone, a 5 1/2 cup machine (mid-sized) is a bit big. Personally I prefer the smaller machines.
Finally, rice cookers can be used to make many different kinds of dishes. Some can even make cakes. Another can be used to make risotto. Therefore think carefully about how you want to use your rice cooker so that you can find the best one for your needs.
