There are two schools of thought on dealing with hair loss and although they are not mutually exclusive they attack the problem from two different directions. The first is to deal with the problem early before the loss becomes too pronounced and the other method is to deal with the problem after in has become apparent that you are going bald. Normally, the baldness will show up as hair loss above the forehead, called a receding hair line, or on the crown of the head with this second result of hair loss called a classic bald spot.
The first method involves learning how to prevent hair loss before it gets out of hand. One of the best hair loss treatments which is used to slow down or stop the problem altogether is the FDA approved drug Minoxidil. Minoxidil is a topically applied substance that is rubbed into the scalp twice a day. The drug is absorbed through the skin and protects the hair follicles (hair roots) from attack by the DHT. DHT is a hormonal substance which is the cause of hair loss in men who suffer from male pattern baldness. About 95% of men who experience hair thinning or balding have this genetically derived medical condition. By applying Minoxidil religiously the patient can slow down, and in some cases stop, the hair loss.
The second treatment is utilized after the hair has already thinned out. Originally this procedure was dubbed the hair plugs treatment because the results were not very attractive and the hair which resulted looked like tufts stuck every which way; like a guy who had stuck his finger in a light socket. This medical procedure has now been perfected to the point that the implanted hairs look natural and grow for years. This treatment is now referred to as hair implants or hair transplants. The idea is really very simple, a hair restoration surgeon removes living hair follicles from one area of the scalp with good hair growth and implants them into the balding spot. Within a few weeks the hair follicles become active and start producing new hair.
Both of these methods will work to help with hair loss but treating early is usually cheaper in the long run.
