Everyday, pets go missing. Beloved family dogs that are wanted, needed and cherished by children and adults alike, are lost – forever. The saddest part is, it’s preventable. If those pets were wearing collars and pet ID tags, their chances of being reunited with their families would have been greatly improved.
Even many dogs with microchips never make it back home. The fact is that people are afraid to approach a dog that isn’t wearing a collar and pet ID tag. They’re scared that the dog is diseased, sick or aggressive. They don’t realize he’s lost. Without pet ID tags, people tend to assume the dog is unwanted and with good reason. The chances of them stopping, loading the dog in their car and driving it to a veterinarian or shelter to check for a microchip are slim at best.
On the other hand, the sight of pet ID tags alerts passersbys that this dog, wandering alone, belongs to someone. Somebody loved this dog enough to put their phone number on a tag and put the tag on a collar so that if he or she ever wanders away, hopefully, someone will take the time to call.
Unfortunately, many owners have an “it can’t happen to me” attitude and fail to take the time to attach plastic pet ID tags to their dog’s collars. What they don’t realize is that it only takes a second, a door left open, a hole in a fence, a cat or a squirrel wandering by when they come home and open the front door – and their dog is gone forever. Dogs have a keen sense of smell and just because you don’t know there’s a cat 15 feet behind you, doesn’t mean your dog can’t smell him there. Even though he loves you, it’s in his nature to chase that cat.
Maybe your pet will never leave home. Maybe you’ll be one of the lucky ones. Then again, maybe you won’t.
