Canopy Bed Politics

OK, now I’ve had my fair share of people look down their nose at me, for one reason or another, but I think I’ve now seen it all. Forget about the mile high club, I can only conclude that there is also a canopy bed owners club too.

Basically I went to this soiree (yes that’s the best word to describe it) the other night, friends of friends, and I could tell they were well to do. My wife and i are doing pretty well ourselves so we were feeling at ease, but then the subject of bedroom furniture came up and everyone round the table started talking about their canopy bedroom sets! I mean they all had them. It was as if you hadn’t arrived in this town until you’d got yourself the complete canopy bedroom set. When they found out that this wasn’t really our style… you could have heard a pin drop.

No what’s up with that. Firstly I’m not running a hotel so why would I want a canopy bed in the middle of my room? That’s what I like about staying in a nice place on vacation, I get to experience those not so common experiences like sleeping in a romantic four poster bed. If I’m climbing into one every night then the thrill dies off pretty quick.

Secondly it’s not even like these bedroom sets have any class. If you take the time to go out and find a beautiful antique canopy bed and then surround it with other equally classy bits of furniture then hats off to you. You’re obviously someone with great interior design taste, but if you just go to some canopy bed guide and buy some prefabricated bed with matching wardrobe and dresser the that’s just sad in my opinion. No thought has gone into it and your not making any kind of original statement in your room. Well each to there own but it’s not my style.

Many people want their home to look the way that appreciate it the most. Sometimes this means that you will have to redecorate on a frequent basis, so that the looks of your home are up to date. The problem with redecorating is that it costs quite a lot, and if you have to buy new furniture on a regular basis, then you are bound to spend a fortune on them in the long run. You can avoid this to a degree by shopping for inexpensive furniture, and then you can sell the old ones for a good price.

Normally people look for cheap furniture, and go to places like IKEA to get the lowest possible price they can. IKEA is a world wide enterprise that produces their furniture mostly in India, and they have done some quite innovative things to be able to get their prices down. First of all they have revolutionized the storage problem that comes with furniture – they store their items in sleek boxes. This is made possible by the fact that they have to be assembled by the user. There is an innovative group of people in their design team who design the furniture in a manner that it can be boxed to as small box as possible, and easily assembled. Are they what I could call inexpensive furniture and feel good about it? Yes and no.

The problem with saving at all the possible places is that it does not produce that much of quality. Yes the furniture lasts for a few years, but after that they are in a condition in which the have no use whatsoever. Many people buy this furniture and after use they throw it away – I have personal experiences with this as well. Once I bought a canopy bed from them and ended up not using the canopy frame for it. The problem was that it was not strong enough for me to trust on it and use curtains on it. It was difficult to assemble and even more difficult to take apart once I realized that I won’t use it.

After two years of use the bed frame was so worn out , that I pretty much had no other choice but to throw it away. If I would have bought high quality inexpensive furniture, it would have had a beter resale value, and I would have saved money. For example, I bought this console table from an after christmas sale. It was 50% off and I managed to haggle the store to get even more off – I actually made quite a deal with that one. After being used for four years I could still sell it for half the price that I paid for it, and I used the money to get an up to date model that I enjoyed.

When you are looking for inexpensive furniture, you need to be sure that you are not looking for the cheapest there is, but instead look for high quality furniture, and try to find the lowest possible price for them. That way you will not only save money at the time of purchase, but also in the future.
