Canopy Bed Politics

OK, now I’ve had my fair share of people look down their nose at me, for one reason or another, but I think I’ve now seen it all. Forget about the mile high club, I can only conclude that there is also a canopy bed owners club too.

Basically I went to this soiree (yes that’s the best word to describe it) the other night, friends of friends, and I could tell they were well to do. My wife and i are doing pretty well ourselves so we were feeling at ease, but then the subject of bedroom furniture came up and everyone round the table started talking about their canopy bedroom sets! I mean they all had them. It was as if you hadn’t arrived in this town until you’d got yourself the complete canopy bedroom set. When they found out that this wasn’t really our style… you could have heard a pin drop.

No what’s up with that. Firstly I’m not running a hotel so why would I want a canopy bed in the middle of my room? That’s what I like about staying in a nice place on vacation, I get to experience those not so common experiences like sleeping in a romantic four poster bed. If I’m climbing into one every night then the thrill dies off pretty quick.

Secondly it’s not even like these bedroom sets have any class. If you take the time to go out and find a beautiful antique canopy bed and then surround it with other equally classy bits of furniture then hats off to you. You’re obviously someone with great interior design taste, but if you just go to some canopy bed guide and buy some prefabricated bed with matching wardrobe and dresser the that’s just sad in my opinion. No thought has gone into it and your not making any kind of original statement in your room. Well each to there own but it’s not my style.
