The Dressing Tables Guide

If you are looking for a dressing table for your bedroom or dressing room then there are a number of things you should take into consideration when deciding which dressing table is right for you. Speaking generally you will have to choose from one of three different styles of dressing table; the Double Pedestal; Single Pedestal or the Console Table.

The Double Pedestal dressing table is probably the most imposing of the three styles. By definition a double pedestal comes with two columns of drawers or one set of drawers and cupboard, either side of the table itself. As you can imagine a dressing table like this will afford you a great deal of storage space, but you will more than likely have to pay a bit more for it. Additionally the double pedestal dressing table is going to take up more space in your bedroom so you need to make sure you can accommodate one.

An ideal compromise is the Single Pedestal Dressing Table. Similar to the double pedestal in many respects, the single pedestal, as the name suggests, will have only one column either on the right or the left hand side of the table. Again you should find that you will have plenty of storage space while the table itself can be significantly more compact than a double pedestal.

The third style is the Console Table; which is the cheap and cheerful option. A console table is more like a desk than a dressing table and will will find the drawers run along the base of the table top itself rather than in a column down the side.

Once you have decided on your style of dressing table the next big choice will likely be the materials used in the table’s construction. We would always recommend you choose a solid wood dressing table where possible; something in Pine or Brooklyn Oak will look far more impressive than a table made from plywood and chipboard.

Finally, depending upon whether you require a traditional or contemporary look you will need to choose the finish of dressing table. The a many stylish, modern painted dressing tables and you are sure to find one in a colour that matches the overall decor of your room. If you are after a traditional wood finish then you will be pleased to know that most retailers offer a variety of wax finishes to give your table just the warm tones you are looking for,

Buying Kids Beds: The Options

When it’s time to move your child from a cot to a bed the choice of kids beds is bewildering. Which do you choose? Thinking about what sort of bed is a good fit for your home and lifestyle is a good place to start before investing in your kids bed.

If space is a premium then you could look at the space saving options. Bunk beds are great for two kids sharing but even with one child the new sleep stations and cabin beds are a great choice.

Sleep stations

Take a set of bunk beds and replace the bottom bunk with a wardrobe, desk and shelves. Now you have sleep station. This is terrific space saving bedroom furniture and if you choose the right one it will grow with your child. What was a great den when are 6 or 7 will become a useful workspace and place for computer gaming when they are in their teens. For the older child, there are sleep stations with couches built in underneath where they can entertain their friends.

For a childs first bed though these might not be a good idea, as getting in and out requires climbing a small ladder

Cabin Beds

Not as high as a bunk and with a box bed arrangement these are a cosy, space saving alternative to the higher bunk models. Your child only has to negotiate a few steps or footholds to get into bed. Nice and snug these have a similar protected feel to the cot with their low side panels and the added advantage of built in cupboard shelf and drawer space.

Standard Beds

If you have a larger bedroom for your child then you can simply buy a good build quality child sized bed. There are many available and some manufacturers can convert these into adult sized beds when your child has grown. This option is a bed for life.

Novelty Beds

If you want to splash out, there are some really fun models on the market. Beds designed to look like a carriage with horses, or a racing car or even beds that look like diggers are available, many online. Alternatively you could opt for a traditional child sized four poster, the ultimate princess bed.

Whatever your choice, make sure that the build quality of the bed is the best you can afford. The best build quality means long service from your kids bed.

Canopy Bed Politics

OK, now I’ve had my fair share of people look down their nose at me, for one reason or another, but I think I’ve now seen it all. Forget about the mile high club, I can only conclude that there is also a canopy bed owners club too.

Basically I went to this soiree (yes that’s the best word to describe it) the other night, friends of friends, and I could tell they were well to do. My wife and i are doing pretty well ourselves so we were feeling at ease, but then the subject of bedroom furniture came up and everyone round the table started talking about their canopy bedroom sets! I mean they all had them. It was as if you hadn’t arrived in this town until you’d got yourself the complete canopy bedroom set. When they found out that this wasn’t really our style… you could have heard a pin drop.

No what’s up with that. Firstly I’m not running a hotel so why would I want a canopy bed in the middle of my room? That’s what I like about staying in a nice place on vacation, I get to experience those not so common experiences like sleeping in a romantic four poster bed. If I’m climbing into one every night then the thrill dies off pretty quick.

Secondly it’s not even like these bedroom sets have any class. If you take the time to go out and find a beautiful antique canopy bed and then surround it with other equally classy bits of furniture then hats off to you. You’re obviously someone with great interior design taste, but if you just go to some canopy bed guide and buy some prefabricated bed with matching wardrobe and dresser the that’s just sad in my opinion. No thought has gone into it and your not making any kind of original statement in your room. Well each to there own but it’s not my style.

If you are looking for a way to turn you bedroom from a functional space you to get your sleep to a room you can use as a retreat from the stresses of the world then you would do well to have a look at canopy beds and consider switching your regular bed for one of these.

I’m always looking for new ways to keep my bedroom looking fresh and generally just a nice place to spend time. When a friend recently told me that they had just bought a canopy bed and matching curtains I realized that although I was aware that such a product existed, I had never considered installing them in my own bedroom.

Now my bedroom is pretty large and the sometimes I feel I could make use f something that makes the space more intimate and private and that is exactly what is achieved since I installed my canopy bed and curtains. The effect is so comforting that I’m going to get some for my little girl’s room next.

Not only do they improve the cosiness of your rooms but they look great too and effortlessly add a touch of class to your surroundings.

Even if you don’t want to splash out on a full canopy bed you can get canopy bed curtains and use them with your existing bed. All you need to do is install a headboard extension or use an attachment on the ceiling which uses a frame to give you the same effect.

Having said that, if you are thinking about replacing your current bed anyway then you should seriously consider opting for one of these. Whether your home is decorated in a contemporary or classic style you should have no trouble finding the perfect model if you decide to shop Online. Companies such as GreenCulture have a great range and often have special offers or sales on which allow to pick up an ultra stylish design for around $1000.

It really is the most simple of ways to turn your drab bedroom into a magical palace where you can relax and leave the worries of the world behind.
