There are so many different tops around now which demand the absence of straps! That’s often not easy, particularly if you’re not keen on strapless bras as a rule. But what is a bandeau bra? The clue is in the name. This type of bra in its most basic form is simply a band of material which wraps around your breasts. Many don’t actually have the conventional hook-and-eye type fastening at the back. This means that you simply pull the bra on over your head like you would a top. In fact, a bandeau bra is a tube top in bra form! If you’re already feeling nervous about the concept (especially if you’re well endowed in the breast department), then don’t worry – many bandeaus sport a variety of hooks which you can use to fasten on removable straps in many different orientations. Halter and cross back are two of the most common options.

If you’re worried about the level of support a bandeau bra will offer you, different bras will offer different levels of reassurance. If you’re small-chested, a basic version with little or no support should suit you. If you’re looking for something more substantial, hunt out a bandeau with built-in shaped cups.

Bandeau bras don’t offer much of a push-up effect, nor do they provide much shaping. So, what do they offer, and why should I buy one? Their most important attribute is one which every woman craves from time to time – comfort. They’re fantastic for relaxing in, and also great for creating simple layers under casual tops. They’re easy, informal and pleasant to wear. And, on an average day, there’s not much more you can ask from your underwear than that.
