I’ve been shopping for a good cheap road bike for my son. He’s become quite the athlete and was called up to represent British Columbia in the upcoming National Rugby Championships in Calgary, Alberta. So, it’s time to get serious about training and staying in top physical condition. Unfortunately he suffers with ‘shin splints’, a painful condition which is sometimes caused by the stress of running. Now, if you know anything about Rugby you know it requires a lot of running, especially for anyone, like my son, who plays in the ‘backs’. I wasn’t sure how we were going to get him training and then it occurred to me, I could get him a decent road bike. One other thing, he already has two other bikes, a BMX and a Brody stump jumper and I’m not made of money so I’m not about to run out and spend even more money on a brand new bike.
Good Cheap Road Bikes
I decided used was the way to go so I started looking around and am pleasantly surprised. New bikes are really expensive, especially when you shop for a quality brand. But what I’m learning is that bikers are a bit fanatical and some of them change their bikes as often as they change their underwear! Shopping used means I have a lot of good cheap road bikes to choose from and because my son isn’t going to be racing or anything I’m not worried about having a bike that is super fast or is loaded with all of the latest bells and whistles. We just need something to help him get out there and build strength and endurance in his legs.
Bike Clubs
Another thing I have learned from shopping around is the number of Bike Clubs there are and how helpful they can be. With all pf my research I’ve decided to join a club and sign my son up too. There are lots of Bike Clubs right here in our home town and the ones who aren’t into competitive riding are perfect for what we need. Although most of these casual riders aren’t training for high end athletics they are really into having fun and staying in great shape. And that is exactly the kind of group we need to reach our fitness goals.
So, it looks like this little trip is paying off in more ways than one. I’ve figured out I can save a lot of money by shopping for a good used road bike; my son is going to get the training he needs and I’m going to be able to spend more time with him by joining a Bike Club plus I get in shape too!
