Safety Tips for Childrens Toys

It is vitally important that we, as parents, ensure that all the toys that our children play with are safe. The first thing to do is to buy good quality, well made toys and then inspect the toys regularly, throwing out any that are broken or may be hazardous. We can go a long way to keeping our children safe by some simple maintenance of their toys.

For example wooden toys are favorites and last a long time but they may need to be sanded down to smooth our splintering parts occasionally. Wooden toys can be chewed by babies and young children so make sure you inspect them often. If the paint is flaking off  sand them down and repaint with a lead free paint.

For toys that are played with outside examine them often and look for rust or broken parts. Toy boxes are great for storing away toys but always make sure the lid has a safety catch to ensure it doesn’t shut if a child climbs inside. It’s also a good idea to purchase a toy box with ventilation holes as an extra safety measure. Make sure the edges are smooth and it doesn’t have sharp corners.

A consideration that many people overlook is the sounds that a toy makes. A very loud toy can be damaging to a child’s hearing. If your child has an MP3 player or other musical toy with headphones make sure they never use it a too high a volume as this can cause permanent damage.

Pull Toys are popular with toddlers who are just learning to walk but there are some special things to look out for with these types of toys. Automatic retraction of the cords is a good idea so that it cannot be would around a child’s neck so make sure this is working correctly. If it becomes broken it would be safer to cut off the cord and let your child manually push around the toy.

Something that many parents forget if they have children of different ages is that toys designed for older children are not suitable for their younger siblings. They may have small parts that can cause a choking hazard if the younger child puts them in their mouth so we should always make sure older children know that their younger brothers and sisters are not allowed to play with their toys. Always follow manufacturers advice on the suitability of a particular toy for your child’s age.

Some stuffed toys such as those that have sounds and lights have batteries and electric wires and should never be played with in the bath or a pool. Keep all toys that require batteries away from water.
