Options For Mesothelioma Patients

Any cancer diagnosis can knock you off your feet. And I do know what I am talking about. My wife was diagnosed with breast cancer in March of 2009. I will never forget that feeling when she called me in my hotel room – I was on a business trip in North Carolina – to break me the news. It was the ultimate nightmare, which was only about to unfold further. Seven months later I was diagnosed with kidney cancer. My left kidney was entirely consumed by a large mass.

I hate to compare different cancer diagnoses with each other. But at least my wife and I were given a chance of survival, plus we had a fair shot to take on the challenge and fight back. And we were also dealing with diseases that are curable. But there are cancers that put an expiration date on a person. And mesothelioma is such a disease.

Mesothelioma is a health condition that is being caused by exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is friable, that means it easily breaks up even under slight pressure. If this happens, microscopically small dust particles contaminate the air, and any person on site or close proximity is at an increased risk of either ingesting or inhaling this toxic mix. As a result, the affected person may develop mesothelioma or any other asbestos induced disease, including asbestosis and certain kinds of lung cancers.

So what are the options for mesothelioma patients? As we already discussed, a cure is yet to be found. Extensive research over the past few decades brought us advanced treatment options for numerous cancerous conditions, however, the chemotherapies that were introduced to fight mesothelioma, unfortunately turned out to be of limited success only.

Living as healthy as possible has been shown some remarkable results for some mesothelioma victims. Further to that, it is certainly advisable to do research on what the disease was caused by, because there is a good chance that you might be entitled to personal injury compensation. Therefore, a consultation with an experienced and reputable lawyer should be arranged as soon as possible after the diagnosis was received.
