Kids Ski Gloves Are Not Child’s Play

Your child’s hands can get cold very quickly when they are not wearing the appropriate gloves for skiing. The gloves they wear to school or for playing in the yard are not the best choice because they need ones that can be worn for an extended period of time.

When you are up on the top of a mountain, you can’t just run inside to get warm. Average wool or yarn mittens are not a good choice because they tend to get very heavy and soggy when wet.

The best pair will keep the hands both dry and warm, while providing a good grip on ski poles, will wick away moisture and protect the skin from cold wind.

Mittens will keep little fingers warmer because they can touch either other however, they don’t allow as much dexterity or freedom of movement. To get that extra warmth, choose a pair of kids ski gloves that comes with an inner removable lining, or allow enough room to fit over a light pair of synthetic gloves.

This double layer will come in handy if it is a particularly warm day when they may not need both layers. The type of fabric you choose will depend on the type of coverage you are looking for. Gore-Tex will keep hands dry, Thinsulate insulation will keep hands warm, and fleece is quick drying, fairly lightweight and very warm.

For the most dexterity, look for a thinner fleece or a neoprene material that has a stretchy quality to it. A glove with a leather palm will help children better grip their ski poles.

There are even gloves made specifically for racing that have padded fingers, as well as an extra layer of hard padding across the knuckles. This provides additional protection when the young skier is punching through a gate.

The glove should come up high on the wrist, inside the sleeve of the jacket, to form a seal to keep the cold and snow out. This feature is often referred to as a gauntlet.

Drawstring or elastic at the wrists of the gloves will also keep out the elements. A side zipper will make them easier to get on and off.
