MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) is one of the most popular and fastest growing sports in the world. As the sport grows, more people are looking for the most effective training to develop their skills as quickly as possible. One common mistake new potential fighters make is to join any gym or school that claims to train MMA fighters. There are some questionable schools out there trying to cash in on the sport’s growth.
Some traditional martial arts schools with instructors who specialize in aspects of martial arts such as breaking bricks or karate point fighting, are now seeing a decline in interest in traditional self defense methods and trying to offer MMA techniques in their training. If they have years of experience under legitimate MMA instructors, they may be qualified. But some instructors only have a few months of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training and then try to pass themselves off as an MMA gym. That is why it is important to find out first what an instructors qualifications are before considering joining their school.
A good way to develop the fighting skills of a professional MMA fighter is to get training from an already established pro fighter. Training with an experienced fighter gives you access to their conditioning drills and their arsenal of fighting techniques. Some fighters are good at what they do, but are not necessarily good trainers, so if you don’t feel that a particular fighter will make a good instructor keep looking for another gym.
Training under an experienced coach in MMA is always the best option. MMA training is a very physically demanding activity, and a fighter can get injured if proper form and training is not done correctly. Good instructors won’t just show you how to do a technique, but will observe you while drilling and sparring, and point out details that you’re missing. They will also make sure you are safe and will weed out the dangerous and disrespectful teachers from their gym.
If, for some reason, it is not possible to get instruction from a good coach, there are other options available. Successful MMA fighters and instructors have written books, produced DVDs, and even created online MMA training programs to help people learn various fighting techniques and workout routines. If you start off learning on your own through books and other media, make sure you have a trustworthy trainer partner and a safe training environment. Before you start training, make sure you and your training partner have a clear understanding that you are training together to learn techniques rather than compete against each other. You both will learn a lot quicker and will greatly reduce chances of injury.
