The art of making candles is an ancient one. Its not only an art, there is an aspect of science involved too. Don’t let that put you off though as learning how to make a candle is great fun! Some people make candles because they enjoy the light of the flame, while others are influenced by the smell of a votive candle and this turns them into career candle makers. Then there those who love that they can make them into any shape they please and in an infinite range of colors.

Is easy enough to get started. The first thing you need to decide is what wax you want use, beeswax, paraffin or soy. Paraffin is the most popular choice as it doesn’t cost much and is easy to come by. Beeswax is also popular because it is easy to work with. Soy wax is bring up the rear, but it is becoming more popular due to the fact that its totally natural and is cleaned up using only soap and water.

You need less than 10 things to get started making a candle. Wax, wicks, a big pot, a wax melter, a thermometer, some sort of mold, putty to use with the molds, dyes and fragrances.

First, fill the pot half way with water and put the pot over a medium heat. Put the melting container in the pot of water. Add your solid wax to the melter. At this stage you need to consider your mold before you decide what temperature to make the wax. If you decide to use a glass, plastic or cardboard mold then heat the wax to 135 degrees. If you go for a metal mold you can heat the wax all the way up to 185 or 195 degrees. Use the thermometer to make sure you get it to the right temperature.

Once you get the wax up to the right temperature its time to add in your fragrances and colors. Make sure you stir the mix carefully. When you are happy with the color and smell it is time to get your wick ready and remove the wax melter from the pot. Put the wick or wicks into position in the mold and slowly pour in the wax. Leave the wax to cool at room temperature for 12 hours, then after that put the mold in the fridge for a further 12 or 15 hours.

When choosing their wax mold, many people base the design on the candle holder they are going to use. A votive candle holder will let the scent be at its richest. Or you could opt for crystal or glass candle holders. No matter what holder you use, your great home-made candle will bring a lovely soft light and great smells to your room, and you have the satisfaction of knowing you made it yourself.
