Do You Think You Have Sleep Deprivation Symptoms?

Sleep deprivation symptoms are not simple to diagnose. There are often qualifying factors that can complicate any diagnostic situation. An employee who falls asleep at work or a driver who has difficulty staying awake may each have very different causes for their problems. Reactions to medications, mental illnesses, and stress can all contribute to day-to-day problems with sleep. The term “sleep deprivation” is reserved for use when a patient is kept awake by external factors, such as loud noises or deliberate interruption.

Sleep deprivation symptoms can mimic schizophrenic behavior. A patient may show evidence of an inability to make connections with others. Avoidance of people and social situations may occur. These and other symptoms can easily result from activities or actions that interrupt sleep. It is also possible that regular sleep patterns cannot be resumed, even after the cause of the interruption has ceased.

Other sleep deprivation symptoms can include antisocial behaviors and aggression. Animals that are being tortured also evidence this type of behavior. Clearly, self-protective instincts are in some way intertwined with normal cycles of sleeping and waking. The brain begins to process events as threatening, and active the instinctive behaviors for self-preservation. Extreme examples even include the commission of criminal acts, for which the person is later found not guilty because of psychological disturbance.

In the short term, the symptoms of being sleep-deprived can be a danger to everyone. Driving and working both become potentially dangerous activities. Self-injury, or injury to others, is quite possible. If the cause is induced by medication, violence and suicide can sometimes occur. If the cause of the sleep deprivation is not environmental or drug induced, the possibility of a chemical imbalance should be considered. Careful analysis of symptoms is necessary. Eyes that do not blink, reduced appetite, a sense of isolation, and detachment from ordinary activities are all symptoms that must be carefully evaluated.
