So you get in the car and your heart speeds up. You feel that your throat is tightening up and sweat begins to pour down your back. What is this? It could be a driving fear. This fear is not uncommon and can be due to something as simple as a bad experience during driving lessons. Thankfully there are ways for the majority of people to overcome fear of driving and to transform themselves into the confident driver they always wanted to be.
Driving lessons can be daunting at the best of times but when you have had a bad experience things are bound to get worse. Maybe you had an awful first lesson, or maybe your parents have drilled into you that cars are dangerous. For other people the fear of driving comes about due to the death of a loved one on the roads. Whatever your reasons, you are afraid of driving. You have a phobia of driving that is out of your control and needs to be overcome before it starts to rule your life. No more will you have to suffer with those panic attacks. No more will you have to take the bus everywhere and worry about links and timetables. You can live your life again just so long as you make sure you overcome the fear of driving and get back in the saddle!
The anxiety during driving often starts in teenagers so it’s best to make sure that even when you learn to drive you are confident about it. You don’t need to be cocky but just enough to think to yourself “I can do this”. Once you have that positive attitude in your mind then you won’t need to worry about developing a fear. If you fear is deep set then why not using this positive thinking and test out your fear? Go for a drive and pin point where you want to go. Each day try to drive a little bit further and further until you can manage a good distance, all the while saying to yourself “yes I can”. Positive thinking is a great thing so why don’t you give it a go today?
