There are many home cures for toothaches but most of them concentrate on taking away the pain until you get to the dentist.  Toothaches are caused by infections, cavities and a lot of other dental conditions, but in general many of these conditions are caused by bad hygiene. Exercise some common sense and be careful of what you eat.  You should know what food items are bad or good for your teeth. Listed here are some of the ways you can relieve yourself of the pain of a toothache:

  1. Researchers say that there are many bacteria fighting properties found in onion and since some toothaches are caused by bacterial infection, researchers say that chewing an onion a day for three minutes will kill the germs in your mouth. It is probably one of the most unpleasant, but effective natural remedies for a toothache caused by a surface infection. You can also just place a tiny piece of onion against the top of your tooth or gum that is painful.
  2. Combine a little pepper powder and salt to create a mixture that is an excellent natural dentifrice.  Apply this mixture daily if you want to avoid toothaches, bleeding of the gums, bad breath and painful gums. This concoction will also help reduce the sensitivity of your teeth.
  3. As much as possible, try to avoid painkillers because chances are you will start to develop a dependence on the painkillers.  The tendency is to procrastinate visiting your dentist and over time your tooth condition will become worse.  If you have no choice but to use a painkiller, do not put the painkiller directly on top of the painful part of your tooth or gum as this will create a devastating reaction that could make your gums swollen and create a nasty bump on your tooth.
  4. Alcoholic beverages like whisky can ease the pain making it more bearable as toothaches tend to be excruciatingly painful.  For about thirty seconds to a minute swish the drink in your mouth, or if it is still painful, until you experience a numbing effect.  If you are treating minors, you can just soak a clean cotton ball in any alcoholic beverage and place it gently around the affected area for about a minute, maybe two minutes.

If you are not satisfied with some of the remedies for toothaches shown in this article, seek advice from someone you know who has gone through this experience and ask for their help.  Regardless of whether the pain is relieved or not, it is important to visit your dentist to resolve the root of the toothache.  Otherwise, expect the problem to recur.
