Construction sales leads can be the difference between a successful contracting business of your own – and having to go back to working for the man. Yes they are really that important.
The problem for most contractors that they are expert in their trade – but rarely know much about marketing – so a term such as “sales leads” sounds very technical and difficult to do. But like most profession the only hard bit is the jargon! All a sales lead is a someone who is seriously considering buying something you may be offering. For example if your company specializes in home improvements then someone who fills in a form in on a website seeking more information about renovating a small bathroom and states that they are in the town you service and want the work started in the next six weeks – are a potential customer – or a sales lead in the marketers jargon.
So where can you find these keen home owners who are wanting to spend money with your business? There are several ways to do it – but they come down to two distinct groups of clients – repeat customers (or referrals from the same) and new customers. If you business is new its tough because the easiest customers to find are those that you have already done business with – without those you are starting from scratch – which is why so many small construction businesses fail in the first year of operations.
For repeat customers its relatively simple – keep in contact – send out an email newsletter from time to time – or even a paper one – make sure they remember you and they know what your business offers – so the next time they need a contractor they will think of you.
For new customers you need to get your advertising out where they are- home shows are very popular for this very reason – though possibly a bit expensive for your initial marketing budget. Advertising in the local area via local newspaper, local TV and noticeboards can be effective too. If you have a business located in the area – make sure you have a large clear sign out that states exactly what your business does!
If there are local business online directories which specialize in your area this can be effective too. Also make sure that colleagues know that you are looking for work. If you are a builder make sure friend who is a painter or a plumber in the same area have a good supply of your cards! Construction sales leads are all around if you know where to look!
