Chemical facial peels are procedures done to remove damaged or dead skin cells. A facial peel may be done at home with the use of over-the-counter products or it may be performed in the clinic of a plastic surgeon. Regardless of where the procedure is performed, the goal is one and the same: to reveal a smoother and better-looking skin so the person will look a lot younger.

Dead skin cells can often result to wrinkles that make the skin look old and unattractive. They can also lead to other forms of skin blemishes such as acne, age marks, skin blotches, stretch marks, and many other forms of skin scarring. Facial peels are done to remove all these kinds of skin blemishes.

For most people, it doesn’t really matter how and where they are going to have their skin peeled. But they have to understand that there are certain unpleasant effects to the procedure. Therefore, before they decide to apply any type of chemical on their skin to have it peeled, they should consult a doctor or skin professional. Unexpected problems that individuals may suffer from the wrong use of facial chemicals include the following:

• Skin infections
• Swelling and redness of the skin
• Excessive skin peeling
• Stinging and burning sensation on the applied section
• Skin pigmentation and many other allergic reactions

Chemical facial peels usually fall in one of two categories: mild and deep facial. Mild facial products are available as over-the-counter prodcuts and may be applied by the individual at home. These products might be used constantly within a week period. Because they are relatively mild, they may result to mild side effects only, if ever there are any.  Deep facials, on the other hand, can cause more risky results and they may not be used a number of times in one week. Usually, a stronger facial needs to be applied within an interval of three months or more to avoid any adverse results from occuring. The chemicals used in deep skin peeling are often strong and constant application can lead to adverse side effects on an individual’s skin.
