Wedding Day Disaster Stories

We all want our wedding day to be perfect, but sometimes things happen which are out of our control and have the potential to ruin your day. Here are some stories about three couples who were faced with disaster!

Groom feeling grim

The groom collapsed and was rushed to the Waiheke Island medical centre on the eve of the wedding wit a mystery illness. Would he make it to the wedding? As her fiancé lay in bed, heavily medicated, and her family enjoyed the pre-wedding party, Susan vowed she would be getting married the following day – even if Andrew had to be wheeled in!

Thankfully, the day dawned with a beautiful blue sky, the groom had recovered, and the couple were able to go ahead with their celebrations.

Gown cover-up

Rachel went to great lengths to hide her gown from her fiancé Paul as they travelled from London, through America for 10 days on their way home to New Zealand.

But an overzealous customs official nearly ruined the surprise as he opened the bag to search for concealed contraband!

Luckily, Rachel was only carrying a weapon of mass distraction in the form of her gorgeous wedding gown, which remained hidden from Paul as he was quickly processed and ushered out of the room.

Dancing in the rain

Tanja and Jarrod awoke to a drizzly December day but remained hopeful that the sun would break through the clouds and shine for their planned beach wedding on Rabbit Island. Just as Tanja’s mascara was being applied, the dreaded phone call came from Jarrod – the ocean was rough, the beach was cold and windy, and it was raining non-stop.

Moving the ceremony inside to their nearby reception venue was out of the question as it didn’t open for another two hours – so Jarrod was sent scrambling for a new location.

A short time later Tanja and her entourage pulled up in the rain at the entrance to Rabbit Island, not knowing exactly where the wedding was now to take place. Then Tanja spotted Dutch and New Zealand flags marking a grassy path and followed it to find Jarrod surrounded by friends and family in a beautiful clearing sheltered by towering pine trees.

Thankfully, the rain stayed at bay during the short ceremony, reappearing just in time for champagne and photos! Although the wild weather added some extra stress, it also added a special dimension to their wedding, from unique photo opportunities to some very lasting memories.

How will you deal with unexpected problems? You can make the most of it like these couples or let it ruin your day – I know what I would rather do!

The world is full of ideas of what to do and how to do it. Unfortunately, we far too often take the easy way out by listening to the tried and true ideas of so many others, leaving use with tired tradition and something that is less than unique. Originality is the key, whatever it is your doing. The reason why so many artists, writers, athletes, and actors, and anyone else for that matter seems so good at something is because they are original. People recognize originality and that is what appeals to them.

When it comes to weddings, originality is so important. That is, if you want that one special day to be extra, extra special. A wedding is always memorable, after all it is about openly uniting and making a pledge to the one you love. However, a wedding can be made even more memorable when detailed planning goes into the decor: colors, theme and of course, your wedding centerpieces.

Now, you will want those centerpieces to tie in with your colors and theme, however, you can go original and make them fun as well. If it’s flowers you like, you could always go with roses or carnations, but if you want to do something different, sunflowers, orchids, pansies, daisies and a slew of other flowers could really show off your unique tastes. If your wedding is seasonal, harvest themes or pumpkins are nice for the fall; faux evergreens would be fun near Christmas. Your wedding centerpieces can reflect the place where your wedding is being held, such as a certain town or city, or an outdoor locale. You could say something about your upcoming honeymoon to a place far away or even reflect your personalities and interests. When it comes to wedding centerpieces, the sky is the limit. You can do much and still stick within the theme and colors you have planned. The idea is to make your guests smile and enhance the joy of this special day.

Many solutions exist for unusual and unique wedding centerpiece ideas. One of the biggest concerns is going to be the space you have for the reception and the kinds of tables you will be using. If the space is small, your tables will be smaller, and if you have a lot of guests, the centerpieces could pose a problem if not properly planned. I doubt you want to see your lovely centerpieces sitting in the floor simply to make room for your guests to eat. If your tables are small, you might consider tall wedding centerpieces. These tall wedding centerpieces are a great solution because they offer the same elegance, beauty and originality, without taking up the entire table. Ideas include tall vases of flowers, tall candles, and even tall plants. The options are limitless. Simply think vertical.

Wedding centerpieces are vital part of your wedding decor. You don’t want to overlook it, and there are plenty of ideas to make them work with the rest of your overall decor.

Choose the Best Wedding Centerpieces

So finally the big day is in sight and the plans are to be executed. With all the trappings and trimmings don’t forget you should have the best wedding centerpieces on display. You will want your wedding to have its own distinctive features and the many aspects that make the wedding personal to you will be the influences you need to draw on.

So where do you start when considering the centerpieces for weddings? You will want your special day to reflect different things and you can draw on many things. The personalities of the Bride and Groom, the season in which the wedding takes place, the venue at which it will be held are all important when decisions are being made.

Is the wedding to be a traditional one? Or perhaps your special day will want to reflect a theme? Are there cultural considerations to take into account? Of course the month your big day takes place is of primary importance when selecting wedding table centerpieces.

When you set that special date the weather will have impacted your decisions about many aspects of the day. In summer bright flowers are bountiful and may be fitting. In the fall you may want to consider more autumnal tones reflecting the bountiful harvest. Taking a queue from nature you may incorporate corn and wheat with its yellowy hues, and perhaps the earthy orange shades of the setting sun. A winter wedding may create images of snow flakes and fur with crimson to add warmth and contrast.

You may have a themed celebration so will want your wedding centerpiece to combine many aspects to pull the whole theme together and make it a really personal experience for your guests. Your reception venue will have been chosen with care, the seating plan will have taken much mulling over. How many tables are required and how large the tables are will impact the decisions you make. A more traditional wedding will require a different approach to a contemporary design. All the different elements will have been considered and wedding centerpiece ideas can be the very thing that makes the day complete.

You can also add little flowers in between the shells if you want to for added elegance.

Elegant Black and White Wedding Invitations

For a an elegant wedding celebration, contemporary black and white wedding invites can really set the tone. Design wedding invitations that speak of your unique ceremony either by collaborating with a local print shop or by using desktop publishing software in your own home. Black and white wedding invitations can enhance the message by framing it with a memorable theme.

Begin the process with a selection of text such as a poem or memorable song lyric the couple share. Giving the date, time, and location of the wedding are of course the main purpose of the invite. Be sure to include the date required for RSVP, along with an acceptance card and return envelope. Although colorful wedding invitations will catch the eye of the recipients, using only the two tones of black and white can give additional significance to the wording.

It is possible and practical to design the invitations and then bring or email the finished digital product to a local copy and print shop. A wide selection of papers, binding options, along with professional grade cutters and folding machines can give a professional and pleasing end result that minimize the stress for all concerned. Additionally, sharing ideas with a team of experts can be more satisfying than simply contracting out the entire project.

An option for expanding the choice of designs available is to create the invitation using heavy card stock. Ribbons, lace, cutouts, or even fine stationery can be affixed to the card stock in a one-of-a kind pattern to express the couple’s sentiments and create a memorable decoration. The invitation is a prelude to the actual ceremony. An original black and white creation can build anticipation for an equally original and elegant ceremony.

When surfing the internet to gather ideas and templates for diy modern wedding invitations, one will find programs free for download or available at a small cost. This way a specific desktop publishing program will not be necessary. Personal computer users should always take precautions when downloading any software by maintaining an updated virus protection program along with software to detect, prevent, and remove spy-ware and ad-ware. Happy wedding planning!

Choosing Winter Wedding Venues

Winter wedding venues are becoming increasingly popular. Getting married in the winter surrounded by snow and log fires is very romantic not to mention cheaper than marrying in the height of the summer season. You will also find that you can save on honeymoon costs by holidaying at these off peak times. So what extra things do you need to think about with regards to a wedding venue in the winter months?

Keeping warm
Perhaps the biggest problem during the winter is, as you can imagine, keeping warm. This applies to the guests at both the ceremony and wedding reception venues as well as the bridal party who may well have to stand outside for a fair amount of time for photographs.

Think of your guests by ensuring that warm drinks are readily available for them at both the church and on their arrival at the reception. Make sure the bride and other members of the wedding party have suitable warm clothes such as shawls or wraps. Try and find a venue that has an abundance of open fires for your guests to huddle around until they have warmed through. These will then provide great focal points and a cozy and intimate atmosphere during the reception.

Be practical
There are various practicalities that should not be forgotten about with a winter wedding venue. Firstly ensure you book it for a time that is early enough to arrive for photographs to be taken before it gets dark. Next make sure it will not be inaccessible if there is a thick layer of snow around at the time of your wedding. And lastly when choosing between locations, pick the one with the best indoor backdrops for photos should your planned for snowy setting turn out to be a miserably wet and cloudy one.

Most considerations regarding which wedding venue is best for you will be the same whenever you are getting married, but hopefully the few points mentioned above will give you extra food for thought if you are planning a winter wedding.

Every bride dreams of the perfect wedding-multiple bridesmaids, a lavish setting, beautiful music-all coming together with loads of family and friends.  Those dreams should never be dismissed for any reason, but there are some guidelines a bride and her groom should keep in mind as they plan their dream wedding.

When planning a dream wedding, write down all those fantasies.  Don’t let a budget throw a wet blanket on the fantasies.  Write down everything—from flowers to flower girl; from wedding cake to wedding dress; from band to big eats.  And the list goes on and on.  It’s the greatest day of a couple’s life—spare no dreams.

Both bride and groom should write their lists separately, then exchange with one another.  If one partner has some off-the-wall ideas, the other person should never be critical.  This is not the time to have a closed mind.  Discuss one another’s ideas, then decide on the ones most important to both bride and groom.

Put your ideas in numerical order-number 1 being the most important. (This is a great exercise for couples to put in place in their married lives.)  After prioritizing, it’s time to get real.  How much does the couple want to spend?  And what on their lists will their budget allow?

There are literally dozens of things to consider, but the all important budget looms large for any bride and groom.  So it is of the utmost importance to decide on the things in a wedding that are the most meaningful to the bridal couple.  Estimate the costs of those things, then plan a budget around it.

A budget is never set in stone, but don’t go overboard.  Couples should also realize that no matter what they spend on their wedding, they are still very much married and their wedding day will be a great day.  With some planning, an open mind, and a reasonable budget, just about any couple can have the wedding of their dreams.

A footnote to consider–A couple might also keep in mind weddings they’ve attended.  They should think about all the things in those weddings they liked and all the things they didn’t like.  The music was superb, but the setting was over decorated.  Too many attendants could detract from the bride’s grand entrance, while another bride might love the pomp and circumstance of several bridesmaids.  One wedding’s simplicity adds to the sweetness of the ceremony or maybe it was too short and sweet.  There are no shortage of good wedding ideas.

If you are after some unique wedding centerpieces ideas, a display of edible items can really cause a stir. Traditional flower arrangements are being replaced with more and more different options including candles, balloons and food. Food centerpieces look quite fun and guests will remember the stylish displays for years to come.

Some centerpieces made with food are meant to be eaten and others are not. Sometimes the colors offered by food items is what makes them tie in with your theme and at other times the display is made with the intention of it doubling up as a snack, the cake or a wedding favour.

Whenever you opt for a centerpiece that strays from the usual ideas it is best to choose materials that tie in somehow with your wedding theme. A tropical wedding centerpiece could make use of tropical fruit, a beach wedding could use shell or starfish shaped chocolates and a red themed wedding could use chocolate dipped strawberries as a red wedding centerpiece.

The key to making food centerpieces work is their presentation. You do not want the table to look like your kitchen counter with its fruit bowl. You want to create something stunning and elegant. White, raised platters work well piled high with fruits such as green apples. Small white flower heads could then be interspersed between the apples to set off their color. Sliced fruits could be arranged in large glass vases and covered in water. These could be combined with long stemmed, large headed flowers if desired.

For more traditional weddings with bridesmaids all pretty in pink, dainty little cupcakes with pink frosting could be displayed on a tiered cake stand to make an adorable centerpiece. Stand the cakes on lace doilies for a very feminine touch. If you are using cupcakes or similar for your centerpiece, you may consider doing away with a wedding cake which should save some off your budget.

Not all food centerpieces are designed to be eaten. Some fruits and vegetables offer the ideal colors or ideas to tie in with your wedding theme but are not really edible. Pumpkins are a good example for a fall wedding and lemon and lime slices for a spring wedding. Other fruits can be used for their shape rather than their color and could be painted to tie in with your wedding color. If you are marrying in winter, you could paint some pears in silver or gold and arrange them with delicate white flowers and/or ivory candles.

The great thing about wedding centerpieces made with food is that they are very affordable and you can make them yourself. They are also refreshingly different and are sure to be a conversation starter for your guests.

The design and decoration of the wedding cake is usually of great interest to the guests at the reception. They always look meticulous and its easy to admire the work that goes into them, but they can also be very expensive. If you want to shave a little from your overall wedding budget by having a go at decorating your own cake, here are some of the wedding cake decoration supplies you will need and some hints on what to do with them.

Before you start anything you need to have a picture in your mind’s eye of what you are trying to achieve. If you are not creative have a look on the internet at the many images available to give yourself some ideas. Whilst perusing, try and decide what sort of frosting you are going to use. Buttercream is a fairly sturdy frosting and is used a lot in cake making. Fondant frosting gives the smooth look finish and is typically used in wedding cakes. You could also use whipped cream but due to its need for cool temperatures, it is not ideal.

When you have decided on your frosting, you need to consider how you are going to apply it to the cake. Piping from a pastry bag with a cone attachment is perfect for buttercream. Different attachments can be used to create various designs around the cake. The piped frosting can be used to make flower type swirls as well as shells, dots or other graphics, decorative borders, or writing to include the couple’s names or initials. Before you let loose on your wedding cake with a piping bag, it is best that you practise the designs you are planning to use.

Moving instead to fondant frosting will allow you to get the smooth, elegant look that you are used to seeing on wedding cakes. It is easy to cover a cake with this type of frosting as well as to cut out many shapes to be used as decoration. These could include ribbons, hearts, flowers, stars or any other design you want to include.

Decorating a wedding cake does not need to end there. You could mix up the frostings and include both – fondant to cover the cake and buttercream to decorate. Or why not add some other things into the mix of your wedding cake supplies – why not use edible flowers, glitter, sweets and fruits? Your choices are endless, so get decorating.
