The first documented evidence that beds existed dates them back to the year 3,600 BC. These were very primitive designs though and were basically piles of stones that were covered in animal skins. There was not much similarity to beds as we know them today, but it does show that even early man had a separate area to sleep in.

It wasn’t until thousands of years later that Europeans discovered that Arabic people slept on cushion called a materas – although many Europeans thought that most Arabs were barbarians, Arabia was in fact a very modern civilization, and they had many innovations that were adopted by the ‘modern world’. Materases found their way back to Europe after the Crusades and soon the word became part of the language – it wasn’t until quite a bit later though that we started calling them mattresses. At the time these mattresses were used directly on stone floors, but this must have been very cold and damp in winter, so it’s no surprised that eventually they were placed on raised benches to create something more resembling a modern bed.

There was no such thing as a cheap mattress back then, as all mattresses were handmade which made them the preserve of the rich. If you wanted a mattress it had to be made for you as mattress stores wouldn’t come into existence for hundreds of years.

It wasn’t until around the start of the 20th century that machinery was used to build mattresses, and it was about this time that the likes of Simmons Mattresses began mass producing a similar product to what we would find in stores today. Anakin becomes a Sith because he doesn’t want to lose Padmé, the love of his life. The end doesn’t justify the means, but eventually, he is reconciled with his children and dies in peace.

All these are lessons any mother would love to teach, and she would gladly reinforce them with a movie, wall paper, a bedtime story and Star Wars bedding.
