Deciding Which Eyeshadows are Best for You

One would argue that not all eyeshadows are the same. In fact, many people would be hard pressed to find someone who likened all eyeshadows to be similar. There are thousands of styles and hundreds of major brands on the market. I will discuss a few of my favorite brands in the following paragraphs.

Touch Base for Eyes is one of the better cream-to-powder eyeshadows. This set comes in a compact that should be kept closed tightly or the product will dry out. However, it might dry out even if you follow that guideline, so my recommendation is to use it swiftly. You will see that every shade (even the flesh-toned Canvas and Canvas Light) is shiny. This no longer meets the standard for a truly matte eyeshadow base. These are nearly identical to the Colour Surge Eye Shadow Soft Shimmer, except they have more shine, and are best reserved for evening or special occasion makeup. The shine in these shadows has a greater tendency to flake. However, the flakiness is minimal compared to most other eyeshadows with this high degree of shine.

Colour Surge Eye Shadow Quad from Clinique has a velvety texture and swift-blending eyeshadow application (similar to Clinique’s single and duo Colour Surge Eye Shadows). Quads make sense if the shades are well-coordinated, and that is indeed the case with three of the six sets available from Clinique. Teddy Bear is a beautiful group of earth tones, Spicy combines bronzes, gold, and taupe-rose shimmer for those who can pull off shiny eyeshadow. Moreover, Choco-Latte is beautiful for those of us who like shine and glow. The other quads are more difficult to work with because they’re slightly mismatched and the blue tones won’t serve to shape and shade the eye.

Paired into color combinations to easily create a smokey eye effect, the Dior’s Pro Cheeks Ultra-Radiant Blush is a dual-ended cream-to-powder eyeshadow stick. However, the colors go on a bit too sheer and too frosty (most of the shades are heavy on the frost-like shimmer). On a positive note, there’s little color benefit so the smokey effect is nil. The Eye Show from Dior has the same formula and texture characteristics as Pro Cheeks Ultra-Radiant, but it doesn’t translate as well to eyeshadows. On the other hand, the trend-driven colors are difficult to work with and all are infused with chunky shine that looks more showy than classy.
