3 Top Reasons People Want to Be Attorneys

Before I get too far into this, no, this is not a scientific list. I’m an attorney. I’ve talked to tons of attorneys about why they decided to be an attorney, and I’ve talked to a lot of law school students about this. So, to be fair, let’s call it the top 3 unofficial reasons people want to be attorneys, okay?

1. The Money

Whenever you see attorneys on television, unless they are in the public defender’s office, they are rich. They are working in huge office buildings in huge offices. They are all dressed to the nines in amazing suits, and they are all pretty. Who wouldn’t want to be like that? I know I do.

And there is money out there to be made, though often not in the way first imagined. For example, I know a guy who is a trucking accident lawyer who makes a lot of money. He helps people who’ve been injured in truck accidents. It’s not a fancy corporate job. He isn’t in a high rise building, but he works for the injured and makes a lot of money doing it.

2. The Prestige

Whether people admit it or not, if you are a lawyer, you are afforded a certain level of respect. Despite all the jokes and bad press that is out there, people understand that if you are a lawyer, chances are that you have two other qualities we’d all like to have: (1) you are smarter than the average person; and (2) you know something about the law. And people would love to have those qualities.

For example, you might not think a criminal attorney or a tractor trailer accident attorney (like my guy in the example) would get much respect from people. But whenever you tell people you do something like that you get two immediate reactions. The first is “really?” The second is about 25 questions about the law. They get respect.

3. It’s a Family Business

Believe it or not, but a lot of lawyers get into it because of family. Their parents are lawyers, they see what it’s like, they are growing up around the office and in the courtroom, and it just grows on them. Take my truck accident attorney in the example. His parents were both attorneys (though not in the trucking industry). It’s hard to get away from when you grow up in it. And attorneys are a very special breed of person. A little edgy for the most part – always think they know everything. If you grow up with that, you can’t but have that attitude a little.

There you go, my unofficial list. Take it for what you will. But that’s the way I see it.
