Safety is the most important thing when it comes to taking care and usage of power tools like the band saw. Some repair and fixing jobs in the band saw can be accomplished by beginner level operators as well while others will require the help of a repair technician. As a general rule the simpler and lighter your band saw is the easier it will be to complete the repair and replacement jobs. The most common problems that can hinder the cutting performance of the band saw include old band saw tires which are too worn out to work and need to be replaced by new rubber band saw tires or 3 wheel band saw tires. Another problem that often occurs in the case of band saw cutting can be the improper alignment and tuning of the band saw.
Regardless of what problem you are trying to fix and even when you are just trying to work on the band saw, taking all the necessary safety precautions will ensure that you go by without any accidents or injury. One of the basic rules is to keep the band saw fastened securely to the stand or bench and make sure that it is not unstable which could result in falling. Going through the owner’s manual and familiarizing yourself with the band saw you own will actually give you a better idea of what kind of limitations your band saw has and how you should not go overboard with the work. This is why reading the instructions in the manual and following them is extremely important not just for the proper running of the band saw but also for your safety.
Safety gear is the most obligatory part of working with a band saw including the proper eye gear or face shield. This way you can be safe from any splinters and sparks that might cause injury. All the guards of the band saw blades should be in place and during cutting the upper guide should be at about one eight of an inch above the material that is being worked on. If it is not at that distance then you should set it in place before making the cut. The blade should always be tracking in the middle of the wheels and there should be proper tension if you want the band saw to work right. Too much tension can cause damage to the blade due to stretching and too little can make it slip. When holding on to the stock in order to make the cut, you should do it with a firm stance and grip and the stock should be laid out flat on the band saw table.
Other safety instructions include not forcing the stock right into the blade which can cause harm to the blade and making sure you use a push stick and fence for pieces that are narrow. There should be no clutter around the machine which can cause you to stumble and fall and make you susceptible to receive an injury.
