If you’ve looked into mini notebooks lately then you’ve sure to have read about the Atom processor that comes in almost every model. This Atom processor is really what has made netbooks so popular in general. It’s a major part in what makes them so affordable and because of it’s low power consumption, it also helps mini laptop computers have great battery life. That battery life combined with a low price and compact design has made these the ideal choice for many mobile users.
Most users won’t notice the performance difference between mini laptops and a regular laptop. Especially if you are going about basic day to day tasks on it like surfing around the internet or reading news sites. Some specialty computer users like a photographer or heavy business user will certainly notice the performance difference, but only because they have to use resource intensive applications in the course of their work. Anyone in this situation is going to be aware of the performance limitations before purchasing so its not something that takes away from the machines abilities.
For the rest they are a great choice which allows us to save money and find a device that is very easy to carry around. Just through it in a laptop backpack and you can take it with you wherever you go. They have just about everything you will want for everyday use, although it might be a good idea to grab a USB CD-ROM drive in case you ever need to read a CD in a hurry. All of the netbooks I’ve looked at didn’t come with one installed due to space and cost considerations.
With the exception of Apple, almost every other major manufacturer has released a few mini notebooks for you to choose from. Asus and Acer are two of the main companies leading the market. I personally would like to see Apple take a stab at the mini netbook market, but I’m not holding my breath. The iPad is currently their netbook alternative that may or may not be a hit as it’s not yet released, alhtough it certainly looks like it has the potential to be a game changer.
Netbooks weren’t always as great as they are today. When they were first released they were only 7 inches in size and had keyboards that were very hard to use. As time has passed companies have worked very hard to try and not only fix complaints, but also improve other areas of their computers. One big area is HD video playback. All of the new netbooks do a great job of playing back HD contact, where as the first generation ones couldn’t do so no matter how much tweaking was done. A lot of companies have also started producing 10 inch models which work much better than the old 7 inch ones that first came out. Overall netbooks have come a long way since the beginning and definitely deserve a second look, even if you have disregarded them in the past.
