Step 1: Comfort Zone

We all have a tendency to fear the unknown. One easy step to over come your fear is to set up a show and tell appointment. Basically you will go to the dental clinic and be shown around and introduce to the dentist. Seeing first hand in a no risk situation what you are actually afraid of usually instantly reduces anxiety. We all struggle getting out of our comfort zones so focus instead on expanding your comfort zone by getting familiar with the office, staff, dentist and routine.

Step 2: Be In Control

Talk to you dentist. They are familiar with this phobia and are still able to help treat people with the same fear. For some it is a feeling of being out of control that makes them nervous. Set up signals that you can give the dentist and hygienist so you can tell them when to stop and when to proceed. A feeling of control will help soothe your anxiety.

Step 3: Distract

A very easy remedy is to distract yourself. Bring your favorite songs along and your ipod so you can listen to music you love while they are working. You will put your energy into concentrating on the lyrics and melody you won’t have time to worry about what is being done.

Step 4: Desensitize

Take baby steps. If you are afraid take the action you are not afraid of first. Just go to the office and sit and observe. Go sit in a patient chair and practice relaxing. Have a hygienist show you the tools and explain their functions and uses. Gradually getting accustomed to the entire process will make it much easier to handle.

Step 5: Support

Invite a family member, spouse or good friend along. Sometimes just have a friendly face that makes you feel safe is all it takes. They won’t even need to stay the entire time and you probably won’t even need them the second time around. This is a simple easy way to conquer your phobia.

Step 6: Visualize

Play out the visit in your mind. Practice controlling your anxiety and emotions and imagine going through each step of an entire dental exam. This visual practice is the best way to prepare for the real thing.

Step 7:Seek Specialists

Many dentist cater specially to people with your condition and offer sedation and other forms of relaxation to make it as easy and comfortable as possible.
